Deep Learning Enables Sex Classification from Retinal Images with Small Data Sets

Congratulations to Dr. Ipek Oruç and her PhD student, Parsa Delavari, on their new study, "Learning from small data: Classifying sex from retinal images via deep learning", published in PLOS One. This paper showcases the novel results for the performance of deep learning on small datasets to classify patient sex from fundus images. Importantly, this trait was previously thought not to be present or quantifiable in fundus images.
