Dr. Ipek Oruç PhD
(She, Her, Hers)
Associate Professor
Advisory Committee Member
Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences
Faculty of Medicine
Dr. Oruç completed her Master of Science in Computer Science at Bogazici University in Istanbul. Her Ph.D. in Perception and Cognition, and Psychology was completed at New York University in New York. Dr. Oruç is an expert in visual neuroscience, visual psychophysics, face recognition, vision in autism, deep learning, data science, and artificial intelligence applications of retinal image analysis. Recently, Dr. Oruç has been working on:
- Recognition of visual form such as letters and faces, and the ways in which spatial scale, visual noise and blur and observer factors like visual exposure and experience impact visual recognition;
- Visual function in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to examine the origins of strengths (e.g., detail-oriented vision) as well as weaknesses (e.g., face recognition) in the ASD population; and
- Automated diagnosis and prediction based on retinal fundus imaging using deep learning.
If she could collaborate with another type of researcher, Dr. Oruç would work with clinical researchers. Her research team's use of machine learning to analyze retinal fundus images goes beyond eye disease and encompasses a spectrum of systemic (e.g. cardiovascular) and neurodegenerative (e.g. Alzheimers disease) conditions. Thus, in this work, Dr. Oruç would like to collaborate with clinicians and clinician researchers with expertise in these specialties as well as expertise in ophthalmology and retinal imaging.
