Dr. Harshini Chakravarthy PhD

(She, Her, Hers)

Postdoctoral Fellow

Trainee

Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences

Faculty of Medicine

Dr. Harshini Chakravarthy completed her Ph.D in Physiology from Michigan State University, USA. Her area of expertise is in translational research specialising in retinal neurodegenerative disease mechanisms.

Dr. Chakravarthy investigates the molecular mechanisms driving Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), specifically examining how genetic risk and proteases such as Granzyme B promote localized inflammation and breakdown of matrix proteins. She uses blue light-induced stress models in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells and dry AMD animal models to determine the therapeutic viability of targeted Granzyme B inhibition in preserving tissue integrity.

If Dr. Chakravarthy were to collaborate with another reseacher in a different area, she would like to work with clinical researchers.

Dr. Chakravarthy aspires to do cutting-edge translational research, mentoring and teaching, and believes that translational research can be effective when her expertise in retinal cell and molecular biology is combined with a clinical perspective.

During her spare time, Dr. Chakravarthy enjoys reading popular science and fiction books. She also enjoys biking and discovering new biking trails in Vancouver
